The Oharame Matsuri Festival
The term “Oharame” refers to women peddlers who, from the Heian period all the way to the Meiji era, walked about town, selling small items from the Ohara Village like firewood, flowers, and agricultural products. Oharame were famous for carrying their wares on their heads.
Recently, there seems to be an Oharame revival. Wearing navy blue Japanese towels wrapped around their heads, today’s Oharame parade two kilometers from Jyakko-in Temple to Sanzen-in Temple. Visitors can also rent Oharame clothing (women only) and try their hand at planting rice seeds in a large field (the 24th and 25th only).
