The 59th Takigi Noh Performance
Tale of Genji Millennium. Noh and Kyogen plays will be performed on a temporary stage assembled in the center of Heian Shrine. Noh is a type of traditional Japanese musical. Kyougen contains more comedic elements. Japanese language ability isn’t necessary and one can laugh just by watching the movements of the actors. Seats are provided but visitors are also free to stroll around the temple during the performance, and view the stage from many different angles. Kyoto Takigi Noh (Noh theater performed at night by fire) began in 1950, borrowing a Noh tradition that has survived in the ancient capital of Nara for over a thousand years. 2008 marks the 1008th year since the famous Tale of Genji was read in the Imperial Court. To commemorate this wonderful story, this year’s Takigi Noh performance, entitled “Genji Monogatari Millenium,” will include scenes from the ancient fable.Follow this link to the Kyoto Takigi Noh homepage
